My host seems to have just lost one of my subdomains. The database and file entries for that site id are still there. I have recreated the subdomain in cpanel but its just created a new id. How can I get the site back? When I look for it loveyourmaison.patbell.co.uk it just says server not found.

Is this a multisite network created like this?

It will not have a second db — it only has one db. You will not create the subdomains in the cpanel — you will use wildcard domains and let the network create the specific subdomains.

There were some very odd things going on. I investigated the parked domain that the subdomain was mapped to and the ip was different to the A record entry. My host was in denial (it was also their dns) so I pointed to a different dns and the problem immediately went away (unusual for dns pointing which I thought took a while).

It happened again but my host won’t explain how the ip address is wrong. Last Friday another site went down, ping showed the last ip group to be 19 as opposed to 112 which it should have been. For two hours it remained down. It finally got back up and all I got from my host was it works, whats my problem.

Is this purely a dns issue and should I point to a more reliable one?

I’m able to get to the site loveyourmaison.patbell.co.uk, so it’s apparently fixed. But it does sound like you are having some larger dns issues with your host. If this is cheap shared hosting, and you can’t get their support to help you out, that might be a sign that your needs have outgrown what they can provide.

Well the dns is not, necessarily, the hosting service. My next step will be to use a more reliable dns possibly? I have just changed host and my clients’ email was in the ether for three days. I beleived it would be on one or the other host. DONt want a repeat of that

So is this particular issue fixed?

Just to be clear (for any others who come along), if you truly have a multisite network that is subdomain type (and not just a single WordPress site installed on a subdomain), it will NOT have its own database or separate files – it will be a part of the network. You will also not see a directory or folder for that subdomain since it’s being created dynamically by the network.

Yes thats correct. It was the loss of the domain to which the subdomain was mapped that caused the problem. That, I believe was caused by an error with the actual DNS. If others experience something similar, I’d advise pinging the domains e.g. loveyourmaison.patbell.co.uk and the parked domain loveyourmaison.com. If all is well the IPs should be the same. In my case for a short while they were different and, as yet, I have not received an explanation (my host says I must have changed it, but the first sign I had was the site going down and ping showed me what the problem was).

If it happens again I shall certainly change dns
