subdomain sites return file not found

    My main site http://mgx.com is setup to create subdomain sites and creates the site but when trying to view the following error occurs

    http://cafe.mgx.com/blogs/

    The requested URL /blogs/ was not found on this server.

    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
    Apache/2 Server at cafe.mgx.com Port 80

    If I remove the “/blogs/” I come to a page that says this is a placeholder for cafe.mgx.com

    A lot of the posts indicate for subdomain sites to work, the wordpress install must be in the home or root directory. Is this correct? Is there a work around or do I need some additional info in my config.sys?

    Any help appreciated
