Subdomain posts displayed on homepage, can't edit

  • Hi, I have been lurking for ages (and Thanks heaps for all the awesome eduacation and discussion that goes on here: have learnt a bucket load) but can’t find the solution to this problem.
    I am running a multisite wp 3.04.
I am displaying my subdomain latest posts (exerpts thereof) on my main domain front page.
When I try to edit the post from the front page of the primary domain or from the dashboard of the primary domain and try to edit the posts, it seems to work but makes no changes.
I’m guessing this might just be how things are, so I’ve just been navigating to the post on the subdomain then editing it there.
Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

On a similar/related note, I am posting via posterous to the subdomain using XML-RPC protocol, which seems to work great, except when I click on the post link on the primary domain front page, it tries to take me to the permalink eg: example.com/date/posttitle instead of sub.example/date/posttitle, giving a 404 not found error.

I’m not sure why this is happing only with the posterous XML-RPC posts, if I maybe have the settings wrong or something.
    Thanks again
(site is in my profile, wasn’t sure if I was allowed put in links)
    eg subcategory news.example.net

What are you using to push posts to the main site? Sitewide tags or something else?

Hi Andrea, sorry not to mention this: I’ve been using sitewide tags so long I forgot they were what was giving me this functionality.

Start by upgrading sitewide tags. 😉 If it’s been that long, it;s in the mu-plugins folder and won’t be showing you updates.

And then I need to remember/test the editing bit.

Hi, thanks, I had installed Wp multisite.
I can’t seem to find a control panel for it or anything. Turning it off stops the permalinks on the main page redirecting to the subdomains, so it seems to be what is controlling the front page posting.
Have updated it with no obvious changes

OK, I had uninstalled and reinstalled WP multiuser sitewide tags pages and not put it back into mu-plugins
However problem still remains, if I click “edit” on the main page, it takes me to the main page dashboard, and lets me edit the post, then says “post updated” but when I view or navigate to the page, it takes me to the subdomain/date/postname address with the un-edited post. Maybe this is just how it is: can’t edit from main page (note these are all my own blogs, not someone elses.

Yeah, that’s how it is. it copies the post from the SUB site and retains the original permalink.

OK Thanks, I guess I was just confused because when I clicked on edit it took me to the main sites edit page.
Now I review the WP MU tags plugin it makes sense.
can you think why my posterous entries wouldn’t work? They seem to default to the permalink being to the main page:
IE: Posterous post to subdomain.example.com produces a post subdomain.example.com/date/title but appear on main page with permalink
example.com/date/title so when people click on it it gives a 404 error.

Andrea, Dallasm, please allow me to butt in here and add that I have also experienced the same thing. When I create a post in a sub site, and then forget to edit it in the sub site backend, but instead edit it from the main site backend, I find that the main site home page displays the edited post (yes, using wp mu site-wide tags), but going to the actual post, it has not been edited at all.

Curious, however, why does this post show up also in the main site’s backend, when it has been created in the sub site?

Also, I noted that for this post – to which I assigned a single category – in the main site the category it belongs to has been designated ID=9 yet in the sub site the category (same) has been designated ID=4. Can this be corrected to allow for site-wide categories?
