  • Which is the better option when installing a network on 3.0?

    Subdirectory or subdomain?

This is a fresh install with both options available. Is there a difference?

After mapping a domain to a ‘site’, is it possible to then have subdomains of that domain? If so, does it matter if the original structure was subdirectories?

    Thanks 🙂

Define “better”. 🙂 What’s your purpose? there’s differences in how search engines see them, but that’s it. Operationally, there’s little difference.

you need a different plugin to do that.
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-multi-network/

And yes, then the original install matter, because the second network will only give child blogs the same as the first network.

unless you want to domain map the subdomains so you can mix structures.

Yes, I know that plugin. A network within a network. I guess my questions is; is it better or easier, down the road, to have one or the other insofar as mixing and matching both options.

Let’s say I am using a subdirectory and I map a domain to it. Can I then create subdomains of that domain when creating a mini or sub-network even though the original or parent network uses subdirectories to create sites?

If not, will doing the reverse work? Whereby I create the parent network using subdomains then the mini network using subdirectories?

As far as SEO goes – does it matter if you are domain mapping anyway?

    Thanks 🙂

    No.

When you set up another network, you create the new site at the same time. you can’t pick an exisiting one.

You can’t automatically create subdomains if the original install was subfolders. you’d have to map the subdomains.

    nope.

    Nope.

    Need a real life example?

    Yes I do.

All of these are mapped domains on a network.

this is a second network in the same install. The front page shows a handful of member blogs in that network. Those blogs are subfolder blogs because the originating network (not listed) is a subfolder install.

    Ok Andrea…

How are you doing this with http://atypicalife.net I mean is, your pulling all those recent post into your main blog? I sorta understand the mapping thing… But this main blog you have is what I really love and I’ve been trying to figure it out ie
    plugins
    buddypress
    etc…
If you would, point me in the right direction as to accomplish this.
FYI you gave me a great idea as to the family blog network… No more facebook… lol, just kidding 😉

Thanks for you post… I’ve learned alot from you and so many more…

IIRC she mentioned it was a custom crafted (not yet released) plugin, however you can do it with RSS.

http://perishablepress.com/press/2009/04/26/import-and-display-rss-feeds-in-wordpress/ has all sorts of nice tricks 🙂

    Thanks… I’ll take a look

the family blogs are just a subfolder install. the code is a reworked version of one of our old “most recenot posts” plugins for MU. Seriously, that’s it. And some styling.

I’m gonna release it when I get some free time. Don;t hold your breath. 😉

Would this still work and/or is there a work around so that it would work with wp 3.0 networks enabled In a nut shell
And without “holding my breath” a way to do it now with current plugins… I haven’t seen one if there is.

    Thanks again for your time!;)

    Thanks Andrea!
