Sub menu for categorie shown when is current page active?

Hey everyone. Im stuck with this trouble. I have a unordered list menu with categories for list items and sub menu with sub categories. My idea is to make the sub menu visible when the page(cat) you are on , is active. I could probably make php if statement (no idea how/where the html is generated) or javascript, but im pretty new to that too. Thanks for the assist.
