• Hi, when we go to add a new site in Network, we can only set it as a subdomain.

However, we want to have it as a directory instead. Eg. /newsite rather than newsite.domain.com

How can you change this setting?

Or if the setting cannot be changed, can you remove the MU installation and re-do the process?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • When you first set up WordPress Multi-Site, you have to choose between subdomains or subdirectories. Once you make that choice, and your network is set up, you are permanently stuck with that setting.

If you want to use subdirectories instead, you will need to remove your current installation and set it up again from scratch. Be sure you set up your Network immediately after installing WordPress 3.0; once you start creating content on your main site blog, WordPress doesn’t let you use a “subdirectories” set up anymore.

Depending on how your initial install is, sometimes your choice is taken away.

The check is actually a 30 day limit.

There’s other posts here in the forum on how to force it to use subfolders instead. Note, you WILL get a /blog/ stuffed in the permalink (which is why if your blog is older, they remove this option, as suddenly all your links will be broken).
