Then you should install WP at http://a.b.com/ to get http://test.a.b.com
I can’t do that. I have a bit of a strange setup. My domain a.b.com is a sub-domain of
b.com but the main DNS is set up so that I can use a.b.com as my main web site. Everything else has to be *.a.b.com
So if I used a.b.com it would just go to my main web site. Sounds like I might be stuck with the way it is?
Thanks.
Pat.
Yeah, you would have to install it at a.b.com to get *.a.b.com for your subdomains with WordPress. It’s just how it works.
I was wondering if this would help?
WordPress MU Domain Mapping
When I look at the instructions it says go to Domain Mapping under Super Admin.
I can’t find this. Any idea where it is?
Thanks.
Pat.
Super Admin is now the Network Admin
And it MIGHT. You can try at least.
It;s under Network Admin now.
Thanks for the help. I found it. It seems like this has all changed a bit from looking at a tutorial on line.
Maybe you can tell me if I’m doing this right?
I installed WP and had a site http://wp.a.b.com
Everything worked fine. I then did the Network upgrade which went ok too. So now if I create a site called “test” the URL to it is http://test.wp.a.b.com.
Then I downloaded the domain mapping plugin and followed the instructions. When I go into Network Admin and in the Domain Mapping configuration I’m asked for the IP or CNAME. When I click save it gives no indication it did anything.
After that I go to Domain Mapping, I’m not sure what I put here? It asks to either search domains or add a new one? I’m a bit confused?

patc890 http://ottopress.com/2010/wordpress-3-0-multisite-domain-mapping-tutorial/
At WordPress.com, one can have a physical subdomain mapped to a blog there as in http://blog.yoursite.com/ onto e.g. http://patc890.wordpress.com
Curious if anyone has experimented though with domain mapping of own site’s physical subdomain onto same domain’s virtual subdomain, ideal for patc890
– create a physical subdomain http://test.a.b.com/,
– activate Domain Mapping,
– go to admin dashboard of http://test.wp.a.b.com and map http://test.a.b.com to it.
i think it;s been done, yeah.
That would be great but I still can’t get it to work?
Anymore pointers to documentation would be great.
Thanks.
Pat.
It;s all part of the server setup. No docs that I’m aware of… it;s just like domain mapping.
Well it’s not very clear to me. I can get WP up and running and the Network version but I can’t get Domain Mapping to do anything?
I go through the set up of it and I see no effect at all.
Pat
Did you actually map the new subdomain to the site?
“it doesn’t work” still doesn’t tell me what steps you may have missed.
