I have setup WP multi user as a sub-domain config on mysite.com using the ‘activae muti-site plugin). I established a wildcard domain (A record) so anything.mysite.com does work/register and returns a ‘Default web page’ from my host which also notes ‘If you feel you have reached this page in error, please contact the web site owner:’like it hasn’t been fully configured yet.

    I create a new sub-site in my WP-MU configured as (eg) blog.mysite.com

Go to this new domain/sub-site and it still returns the ‘default’ page, never actually going to the new site.

I have tried many parked/addon domain registrations for it, the wildcard (as noted above) and also variations of the Domain Mapping plugin just to be sure.

In all cases the root site (mysite.com) continues to run, and also another independant sub-site domain at myname.mysite.com is working correctly too, but not any sub-domain (whatever.mysite.com) never seems to become activated or correctly dns/wp/account mapped.

    Any help would be great.

    That’s problem one.

It shouldn’t go to ‘default webpage’ it should go directly to mysite.com

So the question is did you edit your httpd.conf (or add in a wild card in cpanel subdomain creation) to point *.mysite.com back to mysite.com?

In WHM (Edit DNS Record) I have added a ‘*’ to point to the same IP of mysite.com, and yeah that does seem to be a problem because it’s not going to the site but displaying that page. 🙁

If you have WHM, then you should have cpanel.

Log into cPanel for mysite.com and make a new subdomain called * (yes, *, the asterisk) and make sure it points to your main instal’s public HTML folder (it’ll be /public_html or / normally).

also changing that toa * cname pointing to mysite.com doesnt seem to work… :-(((
If wilcards are not wrking is managing a specific add-on or parked domain a way to do it, because that wasnt really working for me wither, I seem stuck.
    Thanks..

Just to note though, I have (in the past) added things like docs(.mysite.com) point to ghs.goole.com as a CNAME and they are working fine, as are all the defauls, www, whm, cpanel etc…
Just not * for some reason perhaps, nor any local web hosting specifically by name (like manually) adding blog

And to add, ‘*’ is doing something, removing it results in xxx.mysite.com is server not found, just cant make the * work properly atm.

After all that (and a badly time period of 6 hours with my site suddenly down and me thinking I did it stuffing around with DNS settings…) I got it 🙂
    Your suggestion worked, no WHM DNS SZone editing as has been written so many times, that just didnt work but in later cPanel versions (and straight from the horses mouth too);
“Actually, there’s a much easier way. Simply add a subdomain like you would any other subdomain in the cPanel interface, except make your subdomain * (as if to show on the screen: *.example.com). If this is not working for you in the latest builds of cPanel/WHM, please let us know.”

Thanks for your help Ipstenu, if there is 7 ways to do something I will get it right on the 7th.
    Rex

I’m having a similar issue. My *.maindomain.com is pointed at maindomain.com, but my 2nddomain.com doesn’t go to 2nddomain.com. It goes to maindomain.com even though I’ve followed all instructions for WP networks and the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin.

http://kirtiklis.com should go to http://vndc.coccoyoga.com as the main domain for that site.

but instead http://kirtiklis.com goes to http://coccoyoga.com, the main domain and public root.

    Please advise! Thanks.

Venerated Coconut – it’s bad form to post in a resolved topic (we don’t always come look at them).

Please make your OWN topic and let us know the following:

    Does http://vndc.coccoyoga.com/ work as expected?

Which domain mapping plugin are you using? (There are a few).
