Styling the day and month differently in Display Post Shortcode Plugin

I want to bold the day of the month and capitalize the month in the code below:
[display-posts image_size=”medium” include_title=”true” include_excerpt=”true” include_date=”true” date_format=”j M” id=”900″]
I have tried endlessly to style these separately.
What would the CSS be to style the day of the month (j) and the month (M) in the date stamp?
Example: it is 6 OCT text
