Styling excerpts with classes (including title tumbnail)?

Hello. I’m running into some trouble trying to style excerpts in the Ari theme. I’m trying to stack up the excerpts, 2 by 2, in the content area on the frontpage, as “boxes”.

I’ve tried a <span> around the excerpt php, however it styles the entire excerpts together, and my width 45%+float:left just makes all of them float to the left, stacked under eachother.

I also tried adding a php filter that gives the excerpts a class, but it only styled the text in the paragraph, and didn’t include the title and thumbnail.

Any suggestions? I’m not an expert and not entirely sure this is theme-related problem, but since the CSS and PHP is kind of custom this felt like the proper place to ask the question.
I’m running it local right now and can’t provide a link, but I could sort that out.
Thanks in advance, and by the way, great theme!

By the way, just to add:
Editing the #content .post, #content .page {} I managed to make everything look crispy with width and float on the frontpage, but when I click on a post and it shows as a single, the same styling as on the frontpage is shown, and it looks really messy…
