[resolved] Stripping meta data from JPEGs? (5 posts)

I'm looking into possibly installing this plugin to my site to losslessly compress files in an effort to better improve load time, but noticed on the plugin page that the first bullet mentions 'stripping meta data from JPEGs'. This caught my eye because I've spent a good deal of time applying meta descriptions and keywords to my images to help improve my sites SEO, and when I saw that, it made me wonder if this plugin would be removing that information. Is this the same thing or is the meta data described on the plugin page different from the SEO related meta description and keywords I'm applying to my images?

    Please let me know, thanks!

Nevermind, I should have read further before posting my question. I see you're saying 'Smush.it offers an API that performs these optimizations (except for stripping JPEG meta data) automatically, and this plugin seamlessly integrates Smush.it with WordPress.'

Does this mean I'm right and that stripping meta data from JPEGs actually does losslessly improve image load times?

    Hi there @Drew75,

Greetings and thanks for posting! The plugin does rely on Smush.it for the optimizations and the service does strip some (not all) metadata as noted here:

    Hope that helps! :)

    Cheers,

Thanks David. I've already optimized many of my images with Smush.it and when doing so, I pay attention to the SEO tags (I use WordPress SEO by Yoast as a guide) I've applied to each image in Media>Library and they are all still present for each file even after the fact.

    Hi @Drew75,

Ah thanks for that info, I wasn't aware those tags would remain intact myself. Good to know and I'm sure others will find it helpful! :)

    Thanks!
    David
