Stripping Jetpack for a single module

This is a tough one – I know people have feelings about Jetpack. I do as well, and I’m very happy with its built-in shortcodes module – so much so that even on sites where I do not want/need Jetpack, I’d like to keep using the same shortcodes.

What’s a good starting point to understanding how Jetpack loads all the modules? I’d really like to spend some time tearing Jetpack apart so I can make a simpler/stripped-down version that only includes the shortcodes module. Any pointers to existing plugins that do this (correctly)?
