I’m not a stranger to web development but I am a WordPress newbie. I’m building a WP site (www.cornerstone-resources.com) and using the Customizr theme but I’ve run into a peculiar bug. I’ve created several pages which I’ve used to create a menu within Customizr. The menu displays on the home page but when I try to navigate to one of the other pages I get a “404” page not found. I’ve searched both Google and WordPress and haven’t found anything remotely on point. Anyone have a clue?

  • Hi DaLarry, I have checked your site and seems you messed up with Permalinks setting. I have seen 2 of your menu re-direct to :”http://www.cornerstone-resources.com/news-notes/” which, I believe doesn’t exist or might be deleted.

Please re-structure your permalink settings. Also make sure that the Slug is equal to your page id.

To make any changes, do not forget to create a Child Theme.

Hmmmm. Permalinks!? WordPress is indeed a brave new world. 🙂 I don’t (yet) know what permalinks are, how I could have messed them up, or how to fix them. I guess I’ll do a little research and take another run at it. If you’ve got some suggestions, I wouldn’t be offended 🙂

Hey mybdis, Thanx a bunch. I found the permalinks section and reset it to “Default” and navigation works. However, it’s not going to be very search engine friendly. I may read up some more and try some of the other options. Thanx again.

Checked again and found you already fix the problem.

Will be glad, if you mark ‘resolved’ of this topic if your problem is solved.

    All the best!!

Set the permalinks to be search-engine friendly with the “Post name” setting. However, you then need to make sure that you get the “slug” right for every post/page. Just under the title of each page, you’ll see a permalink slug highlighted in yellow. There’s a button to edit it.

I can imagine a scenario such as yours if you set up your menu to include a particular page, then substituted the page with another that has a slightly different name (and whose slug would therefore be slightly different). You would then need either to change the menu or change the page slug to avoid a 404.

Thanx ElectricFeet. As you suggested, I set the Permalinks to “Post Name” which is where it was when I encountered the problem. WP then informed me that I needed to make my .htaccess “writeable for “Post Name” to work. That gave me a slight headache for a minute or two until I figured out I didn’t have an .htaccess file and needed one. I created it with Dreamweaver and now it seems to be working the way I wanted. WP is certainly different but I wouldn’t call it “easy” 🙂

    Thanx again.

…I figured out I didn’t have an .htaccess file and needed one. I created it with Dreamweaver…

Strange. I never needed to do that.

I’m not completely sure I got a good install of Customizr. I haven’t done a lot of WP and freely admit I don’t really get it, but I never had these kinds of issues either.
