Strange Text/Symbol Errors (11 posts)

I've noticed that throughout the many hundreds of posts on my site http://www.rapnews.co.uk the text of some posts have a few errors.

It seems that when certain punctuation marks are used such as ' or ", an empty square has been displayed instead.

This hasn't been the case at the moment of publishing and has only started happening lately, whilst I've been revisiting older content.

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks everyone.

  2. I've looked over your blog's main page, and I don't see any of the fore-mentioned problems. Could you direct me to a specific post?

I'm using Firefox v1.0.7 on ::sudder:: Windows 98 (don't blame me, it's a work computer).

I've been deleting them along the way. The errors appear both in firefox and ie.

here's an example. its nothing major but obviously id rather it solved.

this example actually contains diamonds instead of stars

  4. Ah, it looks like you are posting to your blog with non-unicode characters. What are you using to write your posts? Are you writing them in the admin interface, or are you using a third-party blog client, an email client, or a word processor?

I am copying test from word documents, notepads or web emails, and then pasting them into the admin interface to do the editing. then im pressing publish. at the time of publishing, everything in the window is correct. and, these errors have only shown up recently.

  6. Ah, that's how you're getting the non-unicode characters. I recommend that you copy whatever you wish to post into a plain text editor first. Use that to sanitize the document or convert it to UTF-8 and then copy the result and paste it into the WP admin interface. A list of plain text editors can be found here:

Thanks. I'll do that in future. It's just strange how it's only just started happening.

Also, how am I to add the tags etc that I apply using the buttons of the admin interface, if I have to do all the editing in a text editor.

  8. Well, you could code them manually, of course.

Or, you could go continue to copy/paste directly into the admin interface and re-type all apostrophes, quotation marks, and any other characters which may be giving you trouble.

i have the same problem as end up posting/pasting from a bunch of press releases. if it was just me i could do it manually as suggested above, but i have several others working on the site and it just becomes a pain for us overall. (well, PR is a pain in the first place but that's a different story).

i thought there was a "kill word" plugin that did this automatically, but i can't find it anywhere. what i've ended up doing is going to Reading Options and changing "Encoding for pages and feeds" to "ISO-8859-1"

thanks. in future ill use a text editor, paste into the interface, add all the tags i need

then simply cut, paste into the text editor, then cut and paste back in.

    that'll work?

    cheers for the advice.

  11. Yep, that should work perfectly.
