Support » Fixing WordPress » Strange Javascript error in wp-admin, came out of nowhere

  • Hey,

I have a site running on wordpress 3.2.1, and it worked just well till a few days ago, when all of the sudden, without any changes (that I’m aware of) the admin site (wp-admin) started behaving strangely, in the javascript console I see this error:
load-scripts.php:17 Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token <

This happens in all of the admin pages, but not on the regular pages/posts.

Due to this error, the jQuery is not defined and so there are some more js errors afterwards, but those will get resolved once the jQuery is defined.

I deactivated all plugins just to make sure, and it did not help.

    Any ideas?

  • Link to site?

It’s not on production stage yet, still in development, also it’s only on the admin site so a link won’t help.

I haven’t changed a thing in that script file (load-scripts.php), it’s exactly the same as it came with the installation files.

Hmmmm. I’m not sure what’s going on. My best suggestion would be to reinstall wordpress. Is there any reason in particular you haven’t upgraded to the latest version of WP?

No, there’s no good reason, just laziness I guess..
I’m new to wordpress, and the whole updating process just doesn’t sound too “inviting”.

I will give it a try now.

Welcome to WordPress. Let me say, the upgrade process is extremely easy. The only time there are issues are if you alter the core files (which rarely happens) or if you use the standard theme that comes with it. If you ever use the standard theme, learn to make a child theme to prevent any mess ups. It’s genuinely a simple process to update.

I have a theme of my own so that was not an issue.

I updated my wordpress version and indeed it fixed the problem.
It’s still weird that the version I had just started to become buggy all of the sudden, without any changes made to it.

Does this type of things happen often?

you just export you database and copy plugins and you theme folder, then make a new wordpress installation, and import your database, place plugins and your theme on the appropriate place. Hope it will help

Thanks, I already updated my wordpress to the new version, it was not a painful process I admit, but it scares me to think that a wordpress installation can just “break” with no changes made to it.

I’ve honestly never seen or heard that happen. Something had to occur. I’ve been using WP for years and have developed about sixty sites using it from a one page to a 1000 page multi site. Never once have I ran into this. I encourage you to stick with it. You’ll soon find, I hope, that its truly an amazing piece of software.
