Hi Sam, that’s what the feed to post add-on does.

We specifically made the core plugin store its feed items in a separate custom post type so as not to interfere with the normal posts of people’s blogs, since they would be using it mainly to import news from other sites and display them on a particular page.

For those who want to create a site purely based on aggregation/curation of content, the Feed to Post add-on is way more ideal and has tons of options for this purpose.

`Hi Jean, I realise that is the purpose of the feed to post. What I am looking for though, is for the post permalink/title to link out to the original post on the source (not a local copy on my site), but to have those posts/excerpts or whichever with the option to be stored in the posts or items table or somewhere similar. Even just the ability to choose if you wanted to have them there. Maybe a suggested feature?

Hi Sam, I understand your scenario, and that’s why we created Feed to Post.

The logic is to keep core simple, and for more options one should use Feed to Post. When using the plugin in the way you mentioned, there are many other things to keep in mind. For example:

    • What should happen with featured images?
    • What about those feeds which only offer excerpts and not the full post content?
    • Should we automatically categorise/tag incoming posts?
    • Can we store in other custom post types as well?

All those and more go together and we tackled them all in Feed to Post. I can assure you that it involves a lot of work to make sure things import perfectly for as many feed sources as possible, that’s why we kept these things separate from core, as the use cases for core and Feed to Post are different.
