Support » Plugin: Wordfence Security » STOP MISLEADING!

  • I installed this plugin because it looked promising.

First paragraph states “Wordfence Security is 100% free and open-source security software supported by a large team dedicated exclusively to WordPress security.”

I was more than slightly frustrated (putting it nicely) to find that it was far from free. So many features require a paid/premium version.

I rarely leave 1 star reviews – in fact this is probably one of about three I’ve ever left but these constantly misleading plugins are getting way beyond the joke now.

    Hi nucleotide!
Sorry to hear you were disappointed with the plugin. Just to clarify, the free version of Wordfence that you can download here from includes a Firewall with a large set of WordPress specific rules that protect your site, a Malware scanner that finds the vast majority of known malicious code found in WordPress installations, various options that allow you to customize blocks, manually block IPs, limit login attempts, get email security alerts and more. We do have premium features but they are not advertised here on

Thanks for the feedback though. We always appreciate hearing what people think about our plugin. I hope you find a security plugin that suits you better.

    Hi wfasa,

There is nothing wrong with the plugin. No denying what’s included is great.

What is frustrating is that it’s advertised as ‘100% free’ which is misleading and deceptive. If it was 100% free, there would be no premium features. From the moment you install and start using it though, there are messages/hints everywhere that attempt to get you to buy premium.

The first thing I did was run a scan and even while scanning there was mention of purchasing premium.

My point is that this plugin was advertised as free and even upon reading the description, there was no mention that additional features could be unlocked by purchasing. So the last thing I want to see is ads/pop-ups/messages/hints etc right throughout the plugin trying to get me to purchase it.

If it was made clear at the top of the description that this plugin is free however, premium features are available to purchased, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. At first glance, there doesn’t look like there is a premium version – and it’s only if you go through the screenshots carefully and/or read the FAQs that some hint is given to that fact.
