I am in the process of developing a theme that will allow users to use WordPress as a CMS. Things are running smoothly however, I am interested to find out if there is anyway to create template files for static pages? I have looked here, here, and here, and haven't found any answers. and quite honestly this looks very out of date. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've been wracking my own brain trying to find the answer myself. Supposedly you can, but nobody will tell me HOW. The "Create a Static Front Page" tutorial is indeed outdated, not to mention jumbled and not explained very well.

there is really good plugin for this

allthough i *believe* that the newer versions of wordpress have the function built in - i'm not sure though because i'm still on 2.09

i've used that plugin for a whole bunch of sites though and it works a dream :)

(oh, and if you want to create a different template for it just make a new template file and add it to your 'home' page via the drop down menu in the 'page edit' part of the dashboard)
