 * hmm, end of the day and no static page examples…
 * a “static page” is a non-database/wordpress engine page, right? one would use
   a static page as a “splash” page that does not have a text intensive look. something
   a little creative, enticing? that’s my take but what do i know?

 * Usually a static page is intended to present, always, the same information (the
   same page) to visitors. Normally in a blog the information presented is just 
   the lastest set of posts (it is not static then). Static pages are useful in 
   the sense of a Content Management System.

 * Not really!
    Pages, just like the posts, are all stored in the database. Since
   the WP 2.1 version you can simply go to Options > Reading and select one of your
   Pages (created in Write > Write Page) as you “static home page”. For further 
   customization… you can even have a custom Page Template for that Page, so the
   possibilities are endless 🙂

 * understood and Cool! i have gone on codex and come back with this question = 
   where is the best section in codex to help me build a custom static home page.
   my intention is to have ten major category links be graphically displayed that
   would go directly to respective category summary archive; plus an “all” link 
   that would go to normal front page. thanks!

 * One choise would be to customize a [Page](http://codex.wordpress.org/Pages) template
   and point to that page as your static page.
