Static front page?

Hi, I am using the ‘thememagic’ theme. I need to change the front page to ‘static’, as the default home page has a slider and 3 boxes underneath.
The problem is that when i change the theme to have a static front page, nothing happens? I believe the resolution is to change the code in the theme files to just remove the slider and the boxes then add the text. Unfortunately I am not knowledgeable on the way WordPress works the front page. In an attempt to change the index.php i broke the theme and had to re-install. As i am unable to put the themes many files here You may find it helpful to look at the theme Thememagic
