Starting Over

  • Alright, so this may be a stupid question, but I’ve been working way too long trying to figure it out, so assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Keep in mind, I’m far from a web designer, so my vocabulary may not be technical… I’ll do my best to make sure you know what I’m talking about.

I had a basic site designed via the SSH Terminal on my Mac. I had several distractions between then and now, and decided that I’d rather use a WordPress theme to design the site instead of building from scratch as I had originally planned.

    My issue is this:
How do I rid the domain of the original coding that I had entered and start from scratch using a WordPress theme?

Thanks in advance for any attempt at explaining this process to me.

  • Depends..what host do yo you use? I know on hostgator there is a way to go through your dashboard on there and you can “delete” your site and do a fresh install of wordpress.

    I’m using BlueHost.

I did a fresh install of WordPress, and can see and edit the theme via this site, and even go to the new pages that have been created if I type them in directly, but when I go to my home page, it still shows the old one.

Anyone? I’m not trying to be difficult, but need to get this resolved as soon as possible, as I have some plans in the works that will require this site to be up and running within a short time.

    Thanks again for any help.

You can try contacting BlueHost and they should be able to help you delete the files from your database that are in the way. This can also be done via a FTP client. Basically what that means is you download something like cyberduck – google that part – and then you use cyberduck to access the files you have at BlueHost. It will list them all and you can delete them there. I realize that probably isn’t quite enough explanation to get you through the cyberduck process but maybe try BlueHost customer support and if that doesn’t work I’ll try to walk you through cyberduck.

You also need to delete the database to get rid of everything. Easiest will be to ask BlueHost to wipe the site/database.

I did a fresh install of WordPress…but when I go to my home page, it still shows the old one.

I have my sites at BlueHost, and I would guess that is a simple htaccess problem needing a line calling index.php. Give BlueHost a call and ask them to help you check that.

It could also be that you just need to clear your cache.
