Stars shown instead of password

Struggling with a nasty problem:
-the welcome mail shows the password as **** even if though the message contains [plaintext_password]. I tried disabling other plugins, to no avail. SB Welcome cannot be deactivated
-the link to the reset URL [reset_url] points to the login screen (useless, as the user can’t see his password in the welcome message)
