• Last month I started creating a web site hosted on BlueHost. There was a staging(beta) button that allowed me to create a staging site with one click. I used it and created a staging site. Now that button seems to have disappeared, possibly after the recent upgrade to 4.7.3, and I can’t find any information about it.
Does anyone know what happened to the staging(beta) button? Has this feature been removed? Is it coming back?

    Thanks,Sacha

  • You should contact BlueHost. WordPress does not come with a staging button.

Thanks for getting back to me. The odd thing is that I originally contacted BlueHost technical support and was told that they did not have such a feature, and that i needed to contact WordPress. So right now I’m on hold again, waiting to talk to BlueHost one more time. This is odd.

    Thanks again.

I use BlueHost also. I see nothing on their site about a staging button. I have a staging area but I did it with a sub-domain.

Did you use a script to install WordPress? When I installed it in the stage site it put a under construction page up until I finished getting everything ready.

Did you ever get this resolved? The same thing just happened to me! I created a site and was about to launch – I logged in last night and worked on the staging site. Today when I logged in, the “staging – beta” option has disappeared.

Hi Rebecca, unfortunately I did not get any further with this issue. Bluehost tech support said it wasn’t their’s and wordpress said the same. I did not install any plugins that could have done it either. The staging site I created through that option is still there, and still works. But no more staging-beta option on my site. The is incredibly bizarre.

Are you hosting your site with Bluehost?

While I wish I had a solution to offer, I wanted to at least report that I am also experiencing the exact same problem… Tried to launch from a Staging Environment but all traces of the Staging beta is gone, except for the red “Staging Environment” button. Now, when I click it on, it takes me to an error page stating “Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.”

I’m using a migration plug-in to migration the entire staging site to production.

I did locate the Staging Environment button is part of the MOJO Marketplace plug-in. When I deactivated the plug-in, the button went away. Searching through MOJO Marketplace support doesn’t seem to come up with any answers either though :-/

Hopefully someone figures out a way to fix this.

I have been using a staging site for development created for me on BlueHost when I installed WordPress. It worked beautifully. When I asked for help on setting up a live site, the chat helper created one for me that unfortunately did not deal with internal links. Having fixed that, I tried to use the staging site for some experiments, but could not access it. I can see the staging folder among my files but do not know how to access it. My second chat about this resulted in the “expert” simply leaving. Any wisdom out there on how to fix this?

The Staging feature is a part of the “Mojo Marketplace” plugin that Bluehost installs automatically as part of a new WordPress instance. To be fair the feature is still in beta.

The “Staging (beta)” menu item is controlled by a wordpress “transient” variable called “mm_compat_check”. If Mojo Marketplace determines that your site isn’t compatible with the staging feature, it will set that variable to “incompatible”. I haven’t figured out what actually makes the site “incompatible” yet.

The “mm_compat_check” transient has a 30-day expiration, so even if your site “becomes” compatible, the staging link won’t show up. You can fix this if you clear the transient. Start by deactivating the plugin, then directly edit the “options” table in your database, removing both options that have “mm_compat_check” in the name (one is the actual variable, the other is the expiration time). Once those are deleted, you can reactivate the plugin, and the link should appear.

I’m having the same issue. Created a site and am ready to launch it but the red “Staging Environment” button takes me to a page that says “Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.”

Contacted Bluehost via chat and they didn’t seem to know how to resolve the issue.

Is it possible to transfer the files to the main directory without breaking the site? In the meantime, I’m going to try redirecting the url.

I now have experienced the same problem with the staging. One day I clicked the on the red staging environment button and got to a screen that says I have no access. I finally figured out it was a mojo marketplace plugin of some kind when I thought it was another plugin. I have deactivated the plugin but am now stuck in staging with no way to launch my staging into production to make it live. Does anyone know how to fix that part of the problem?
    Thanks
