 * I believe the buttons raise security issues for SSL sites. Is it possible to 
   fix this? I am using TwentyFourteen.

 * The buttons are simple html a tag with styles. Basically they are not different
   from the rest of the links of your website. They do not send any data anywhere.
   They also do not require any data.
