 * Can anyone point me in the write direction to create a quick SQL querey to an
   external SQL server (not the WPDB) to place updates in a widget for the left 
   side menu?
 * I have all the code written(porting from an ASP site).

 * you will have to do it in php, not sure if it will work as i havent tried this
   myself or even saw someone doing it.

 * I see I can do it by modifying the functions.php file in the Twenty Fourteen 
   theme.
