How do I get rid of a spurious “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete” message.

My host updates to 3.0 for me without issue.

A couple of plugin updates arrived. I first tried via the Plugins panel but it failed (happens an annoying amount).

Then via the update centre (having noticed it for the first time). Failed again saying it couldn’t create directory /Wordpress (why the hell is a plugin trying that anyway)? and left the “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete”. I went back to the plugins page and this time both plugins updated completed fine.

But “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete” is still there.

    What gives?

  • Fixed: deleted the .maintenance file.

Why the hell does this get left behind?

The common opinion on the matter is that the upgrade script is timing out (either due to lack of available memory or PHP’s maximum execution time) before it can remove the file.

Awesome thanks that cleared it up for me – if anyone else reads this the .maintenance file is located in your root WP directory – I think in my case it’s happening because I set one of my server accounts (I have my own dedicated server) up to require public key authentication for FTP and WP does not have a way to support that.
