    Hi,

Is it possible to use the spell checker included with jetpack on a localhost install?

Can’t seem to do this at the moment. It would be very useful if this was possible.

    Thanks

The Spellchecker module relies on a connection with WordPress.com; the spellchecking process actually happens on our servers since it’s quite resource-intensive. Since your local WordPress installation isn’t publicly accessible, it can’t communicate with WordPress.com and you won’t be able to use the module.

Sorry not to be able to help you more!

Yeah, that was what i had suspected from reading around but was hoping there would a workaround.

Why can’t jetpack communicate with wordpress on a localhost? I can still update my local install of wordpress, update my plugins, and search/install plugins as i would on my live site.

While your site can call outside services since you’re connected to Internet, outside services can’t connect back to your site, since it’s not publicly accessible; I wouldn’t be able to access your site from my own computer, because the server running on your computer is not open to the outside world.

WordPress.com consequently cannot gather information about your site; it just doesn’t see it, can’t access it.

I hope this clarifies things a bit!

Thanks Jeremy, that explains it perfectly! Still a shame though! Would there be any possible way to have the spell checker function on a localhost, or does that depend on communication with wordpress as you stated?

The spellchecker does indeed need that communication, since the spellchecking service lives on our server, and needs to communicate with your site to get the text from the posts.

To be able to run your own spellchecker on your machine, without relying on our own installation of the spellchecker on WordPress.com, you can install it on your server, as explained here:
