[resolved] Speeding up EasyRotator -- 2 Problems + Suggestion (3 posts)

Love this plugin; it's my carousel / slider of choice, and I use it on a few domains. I highly recommend this plugin for those who don't use it; it's very customizable, and once you get the hang of it, easy to use, and very pleasantly aesthetic for your site.

To the developers: When running a Yslow, or Google Page Speed Insights, or other speed tools (I test on all), they all want me to specify image dimensions for the images I put in the EasyRotator. Additionally, they always want an expiry header sent for one particular png image -- FFF_arrow10_export.png. I'll show the results of one of my domains, for instance:

    Issue 1:

The following image(s) are missing width and/or height attributes.

    http://www.wehaveissues.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Baby-Seal1.jpg (Dimensions: 520 x 400) (2 uses)
    http://www.wehaveissues.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Go-Green1.jpg (Dimensions: 520 x 400) (2 uses)
    http://www.wehaveissues.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Gun-Appreciation-Day1.jpg (Dimensions: 520 x 400) (2 uses)
    http://www.wehaveissues.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Gun-Shows-Banned-Tuscon.jpg (Dimensions: 520 x 400) (2 uses)
    http://www.wehaveissues.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Incarceration-Nation1.jpg (Dimensions: 520 x 400) (2 uses)
    http://www.wehaveissues.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Wayne-Lapierre-NRA.jpg (Dimensions: 520 x 400) (2 uses)

The above images are all from my easyrotator plugin. I also get this in every speed test:

    Issue 2:

Set expiration dates of at least 1 week

    http://easyrotator.s3.amazonaws.com/.../FFF_arrow10_export.png (expiration not specified)

Is there anything that can be done to where I can dip into your code and specify the image dimensions myself, and if so, can you give me a little help as far as which file, etc., or what I'd have to do?

And regarding the expiry headers on the png file, can you change your settings with your CDN, Amazon, so that there are expiry headers on the png images?

Again, love the plugin, and thanks for any help you can offer!

    Hi Jason,

    Thanks for the kind words!

Issue 1 - As explained here, the goal behind adding image dimensions is to avoid unnecessary repaints and resizing operations. The way to effect this same result with EasyRotator is to use "No Scaling" as the scaling mode.

Issue 2 - A Cache-Control header has been added for the FFF_arrow10_export.png file.

    Thanks Drew!

I'm not getting the expiry date error anymore. I changed my rotator so that the layout is such that the pictures and thumbnails are set to no-scale. Gtmetrix is still giving me that image dimension error, but that's the only speed tool that's still doing it, so they're probably wrong.

Anyway, appreciate the help Drew. And again, to all those who read this, I have no issues with this plugin whatsoever; it's the best slider/carousel plugin out there and there are a bunch of different layouts to choose from.
