Specific WordPress Forum Integration

  • Hello,

I’ve got some pretty specific needs for a wordpress forum integration and I’m wondering if anyone knows of anything like this is or willing to write something like this (I’m a ruby on rails dev and have very limited PHP experience).

Basically, my site (www.mmahq.com) has gotten to the point where I get enough traffic and close to 50+ comments per post. The thing is most of the comments are really “forum type” discussion threads as opposed to actually comments about the post.

I’m trying to find some kind of forum or wordpress plugin that will integrate directly into my current wordpress site. For instance, when I make a new post, perhaps it will create a new thread on the forum for people to have discussion. I also don’t want my readers to completely abandon using my comments, because the whole chicken and the egg thing. The more comments you see, the more likely you are to leave one. Anways, maybe when someone makes a post in the forum thread that is tied into an actual post, that forum post will also appear as a comment on the WP blog with a link back to the forum thread?? Something like that?

Any ideas or am I going to have to have someone develop it for me? I’ve looked the XDForum plugin and bbpress and things but I don’t really see the tight integration that I’m looking for?

if nothing exists and someone would be willing to develop the plugin (either for free or as a contract job) I’d also be interested in hearing from you.

    Thanks

  • I’d think that there would be no ‘tighter’ WordPress integration than with bbPress.

Did you see this bb-press plugin?

Yeah, I looked at bbpress and the plugin. it does allow you to share the same user table for logins but really its not “integrated” in the sense I am looking for. You have a blog and you also have a forum – they just happen to share the same user accounts.

I’m looking for something that will basically allow me to make a new post on the blog, that will automatically create a new thread on the forum with the same title and when people leave comments in either the blog or forum for that post, the comments will appear both in the post comments and the forum thread for that post.

There is a plugin for bbpress which makes wordpress posts also create a topic on the forum

any link or what is the name of that plugin?

This link is a bit dated, but points out a handful of bbPress to WP integration plugins: http://spencerp.net/id/4

ahh, thanks a lot for the help guys

WordPress Forum Integration vBulletin, Invision Power Board, SMF and others is possible.

    Please see http://www.invisionplanet.com

    Hope this helps.

InvisionBridge’s WP-IPB Bridge does exactly that.

    http://invisionbridge.com

WP-IPB Bridge is a WordPress plug-in that is easy to install, simple to use, with a powerful user database integration and packed with the right tools needed to help you manage your members, user groups and most importantly, your content.

    Member Database

IPB and WordPress user database are completely integrated, allowing your members to login to either one of the two systems using one single login and password. User management is successful and easily managed using IPB’s advanced user management tools, editing a password on your WordPress CP changes your password on your IPB account. Registration is handled by IPB.

    User Group Management

Use your WordPress WP-IPB Bridge CP to change any of your IPB groups into a WordPress author, editor, contributor or subscriber permission, WordPress and IPB group permission management is handled with a click of a button.

    Theme Integration

WP-IPB Bridge’s one click theme integration inserts your WordPress theme’s header and footer into your IPB’s skin’s header and footer making your forum look and feel completely integrated into your blog. An optional feature for the advanced members allows you to manually edit the insertion code to better match your theme and skin integration. Please visit our forums for a simple example of this feature.

    Cross-post Integration

Select an IPB forum from which cross-post your posts, allowing you to easily update your blog by posting a thread on your forums, or updating your forum by posting on your blog.

Comments are also cross-posted in this same way, giving you the option to choose which system to handle your member’s comments and replies. An WP-IPB Bridge CP option allows you to toggle where you want your members to discuss your post or thread, WordPress’s comments or by posting a reply on your IPB thread, or both cross-posting all comments.
