Support » Fixing WordPress » Special (spanish) Characters in Title

  • I need to post a variety of pages that have as their page title spanish worlds. many of these titles have special characters… ie, é and ñ

    If I try to use these characters (or their equivalent of ñ) WP will not recognize it… it strips it of the letter. So ma&ntildeana is rendered as maana… missng the n.

    Is there a fix, a plugin, anything that will allow me to place special characters in page titles?

  • Have you tried just typing ñ (and such) straight for your titles? I know the post title slug doesn’t translate character entities to ASCII equivalents, but it does quite well with the ñ -> n sort of conversion.

    Yeah, that’s the trick: don’t use “entities” – just type directly whatever special charecter you need!

    hmm. just tried this but it didn’t work. i’m on a macbook pro using firefox. perhaps i should try this in xp and ie?

    For me it works the same on iMac G5 or on a PC Win.
    1. I switch the language for the keyboard
    2. Start typing
    3. WP saves it and in the title it “sanitize” the characters, so ö and ő become o
    é = e
    á = a etc.

    but the issue is here… i dont want it to be sanitized… i was people to see the title with the ñ in the page title. ie, one page title is “futuro del mañana” and no matter what method i try… using numbers, html, or switching to spanish keybrd and just typing, whenever I hit “save”, the page title reads “futuro del maana”…. the ñ is sanitized.

    No, in the title it shouldn’t be sanitezed. Only in the slug.
    Where is the blog?

    the blog is here…
    http://209.200.116.191/ag/

    the issue isn’t with the blog per se, but the pages. we are using word press to content manage the entire site. so if you mouse over “OUR VILLAGES” and then “NICARAGUA” and then click “Futuro del Mañana”. I cannot get the n tilde to show up on that page title.

    If I look at the source code of this:
    http://209.200.116.191/ag/our-villages/nicaragua/futuro-del-manana/
    it doesn’t look like a Page created with WP…

    On the other hand I just tested on a testbed of mine and created a new Page with only accented characters in the title + copied over 6x times [ñ] – and it works.

    Well, our site is a custom WP site, integrating the latest build with Cold Fusion in order to push video and podcasts. I should check w/ my developer to see if he did anything to impact the use of ñ’s.
