Spammers got added as admin users

Recently I received two “New User Registration” emails from my WP site. I checked the email addresses and found they were spammers (per google). I then checked my site and they had been added as admin users. Of course I deleted those users.
– How did that happen and how can I prevent it from happening again?
– They were admin users for two days. Might my site have been compromised? How can I find out?

No, they were solarsalvador1234@xxx.com, xtw18387@xxx.com, and dreamsbadtoyou2@xxx.cc (both username and email address).
