Hi,
For people having the same problem, here is how I made the bot stop spamming my forms.
I simply updated the difficulty from default 12 to 20. This made me have to wait about 5 seconds for my computer to solve the hash-puzzle and be able to fill the form but it also made the bot stop spamming.
At the beginning, 1 out of 5 spam from the bot passed through but about 2 days later, the bot stopped trying. It has been about two weeks without spam. I will wait a month or two before setting the difficulty back to the default 12 just in case the bot still has my website in its spam list.
I hope this helps others having the same problem.

Great thanks. When I tried it, it drastically slowed my server and I didn’t have the patience to wait for the bots to give up. I solved it by adding two other anti-spam plugins to diversify my defenses. What worked great for me is captcha-for-contact-form and spam-prevention-for-contact-form-7-and-comments.

Thanks for the info Dave. It’s good to have several options that work to combat these bots.
I have the same problem, just random letters filled in. Thanks for the tip Checo. Changing the value from 12 to 20 didn’t work for me. The page didn’t react anymore. It would be nice if Matthias could have a look at this problem – but he doesn’t seem to be active on here anymore.
