 * Hi,
 * my website is really getting spammed with comments uncontrollably and the website
   is crashing because of this.
 * Can someone please tell me how to turn the comments off completely?

 * in the admin dashboard menu
    Setting / Discussion then look towards top at “Default
   article settings”
 * deselct: Allow people to post comments on new articles
    deselect: Allow link 
   notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)
 * Also install “Askimet” plugin to deal with your existing issue
