Spam registrations / Captcha working?

  • In the past two weeks suddenly I am getting an onslaught of spam registrations, 279 in the past 10 days! I have installed the stop spammers on registration plugin which is working well, however I am curious as to how and why this has happened only recently – the captcha form on sign up seems no longer to be effective?

    Thanks

    @cbutlerjr

    What version of the plugin are you using?

    Hi Chad

    Latest version I believe, 2.8.1

    Getting 30-40 a day at the moment, big problem

    Thanks

    In 2.8.1, the registration forms have a nonce in the form validation that makes it more difficult to spam the form. Between that and the reCAPTCHA, it’s not impossible, but it is less likely.

    Yous should first check your WP general settings. Do you have it set to “anyone can register”? If so, I would turn that off. Having that on would allow spammers to spam registration via the WP registration process.

    Hi Chad

    Anyone can register has always been unchecked, as per your recommendation when installing the plugin. Has anyone else had this issue?

    Thanks

    Any further thoughts on this issue?

    Thanks
