• Hi everyone,

I have a general question about security breaks in WordPress:

Is it possible for a spammer to find some kind of leak related to only one specific post?

One of my firsts posts I ever wrote is attacked quite often by Spam. So I closed the comments on that post for about a month. The Spam stopped immidiatly. Now I opened the post again for comments, because it is an interesting article and I don’t want take away the chance to comment on it. And – how else could it be – the Spam returned.

It is very weired and I can’t figure out what reason the Spammer have to use ONLY that particular post.

I am not really looking for a solution because it isn’t that important, but I am very curious how this can happen.

Best regard and thanks for every answer,
    Flauwy

Edit: Maybe it has something to do with the format of the text: I copy/pasted the whole text from Microsoft Word, without using the “Paste from Word” – Function. Now I have much unwanted html in the article, but it works so far.

In all the other posts I was more experienced and used the “paste” function.

    Should I clean the html?

No. Its very common for posts to be repeat targets, and it has nothing to do with anything other than they know its there. You can close off comments, but they will come back and find another post, and that will become the next repeat target.

I beg to differ, and hope to convince you otherwise. Taking a soft approach to any kind of spam, isnt good for you, or your neighbors on the web. Yes, you do have neighbors, and yes, what you do affects them, us — ME.

In other words, use akismet, or something, at least.

Actually I DO use Akismet and I DO use reCaptcha since the very first day of my blog.

And the Spam stopped when I disabled the comments on that post – for over a month.

So there must be any relation. 😉

of course the spam stops when you disable comnments, until they find another post with comments enabled.

    theres nothing mysterious about that.

I am trying to post comments on a new web site (Gretawire) and I get a pink SPAM box and then the comment goes away and does not post…even if I only type test. Anybody know why?

This has actually helped me very much in preventing spam.

    Thanks for the information.

Why are you assuming that this specific post was the only one on my blog? Actually I have 32 posts and several hundred visitors a day – and all comments are open except the very first one I was talking about.

I have no spam whatsoever in any of the other posts – even if I close the first post.

Indeed kinda mysterious to me. 😉

Anyway, I cleared up all the html fragments. Let’s see if they still spam that post.

Ok, after I cleared the HTML I still got spam. So it was definitely not because of the fragments. With that confirmation, I closed the comments again. Thanks for this discussion. 😀
