Spam Karma - blocking EVERYTHING??? (32 posts)

I recently installed Spam Karma, but my problem is that it deletes EVERY SINGLE COMMENT that is placed, no matter who the commenter is or what the comments are about - people who have previously commented before even get blocked, no comments are allowed through..
I've tried all the different settings in the Options - Spam Karma page, and tried everything, but there's no difference.
In the digest thing they email you when a comment has been deleted, on some posts it'll even say "URL is in blacklist" or something, which I know shouldn't be, and when I check that blacklist url it isn't there, so what is blocking my friends and others from commenting?
Because of this, I've deactivated SpamKarma because I can't get any comments, but now I'm flooded with spam everyday, and I'm sick of deleting it all everyday. Does anyone have any ideas? Please help, thanks.

  2. Reactivate Spam Karma (make sure you have v1.20) and reset the blacklist.

  4. I'm sorry, I meant make sure that you have Spam Karma v1.20. To reset the blacklist, scroll down through SK's options until you find a button that says "Reset Blacklist".

I'm having the same problem... most of my friends don't bother commenting anymore because they just keep getting blocked, or it goes to the moderator bit, and I'm not geting any notification that there are comments to be moderated. Did anyone come up with some solutions to this?

If I'm not mistaken, that version of SK is only for the next release of WordPress (1.5.1).

  8. davincim, Spam Karma v1.20 is for WP v1.5. Spam Karma v2.0 is for WP v1.5.1.

    Sproke, try resetting your blacklist.

Thanks, I pushed the 'reset' button, and this is what came up:

" Could not delete, used 'truncate'.
    Updating Blacklist Table Structure.
    Emptied Blacklist. Deleted: 0 entry"

Is that what's meant to happen?

Also, I tried to "remove IP ban" of my friends IP, and it said that the IP wasn't in the list... is there anyway that I can tell it to accept certain IPS?

    Thanks for your help!

Hey everyone. I've now encouted a new problem. SK seems to be blocking out all of my friends, but letting spam in! I'm so upset, because I don't know why it's not working! Can someone please help? I don't want to turn off commenting, but at this rate, I'm going to have to. PLEASE HELP!! Thanks so much!!

  11. Contact Spam Karma's developer.

    Did you see:
    http://www.unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/false-positives/
    ?

Sproke, no that's not meant to happen - if it deleted 0 entries, that means the blacklist was empty... hence the spam coming through. Are you sure everything is installed correctly?

As for your friends, are they AOL users? Or other users behind a proxy? This will cause the secret code embedded in the comment form to be incorrect upon submission, leading to comment deletion. The other problem is that your friends could be on a Realtime Blacklist server, such as SpamHaus. Turn off the RBL check in your options.

Spam Karma 2 has whitelisting options (i.e. automatically approving your friends) but SK1.20 does not.

Kay, I've upgraded to 1.20alpha now, but there still seems to be a problem. I'm gonna have a fiddle with things, hopfully I can fix them.

Everytime I try to comment when I'm not logged into my WP, it comes up as 'No Input Specified' when I post it. I am soooo not happy.

And my dumb hosting server can't install myphpadmin properly, so I can't even access the damn thing to backup and upgrade.

Blogging is so difficult these days :(

Okay, now it's doing something really crazy.

I have no normal Spam, and no Trackback spam, which is GREAT!

But, it is not letting any of my friends through, and telling me that they've been moderated or eaten. But then, I go to the comments section, where you can veiw and delete them, and the comments are sitting there, happy as larry. They have not been deleted. BUT they are not showing up under the posts. They're just sitting in the comments page.

And also, what's the deal with the 'blacklist maintence' part? It has all of my friends IP's there, with little tick boxes beside them, with this message that says

"These entries were automatically added to the blacklist, please edit as necessary, uncheck the ones you do not want to keep and submit the form to make the ban permanent"

What does this mean? Do I uncheck them so that they do not go into the black list, or do I uncheck them so that they do go into the blacklist? This message worded very badly! *spanks SKcreators hand*

  17. They only go into the blacklist if leave the checkmark by them and click the submit button at the bottom of that section. But, in your case, you may want to consider just resetting the blacklist.

Oh, and make sure that you have at least Spam Karma v1.20.

Personally I object to SK's reader-unfriendly messages like the one you mentioned (other's like 'Bad karma, man bad karma'). I object to making my readers feel guilty for no reason whatsoever by a plugin, which made the mistake in the first place.
    Is it just me?

Also I faced other issues like it provides lots of false positives and makes rather strange assumptions on identifying spam. This is why you may sometimes find myself ranting whenever similar SK issues come up. It is not personal. I just feel bad when anyone else faces the same problem which I have faced with it.
I have posted about it in detail in my blog.

Some people like podz successfully uses it and defends it vigorously. Few posts above he threatened to delete all my posts too!
So I felt a detailed explanation is in order behind my rant.

As to podz, be my guest, use your privileges as you feel right. I have seen serious problems with this software (and I have no good reason to believe that I am alone, looking at numerous problems others have posted about this) and if I cannot inform the users about it in this forum...

Anyway personally I don't use it. I have been using HashCash and Referrer Bouncer plugins along with few WP 1.5 options and I am spam free for last three months(at one point I had around 600 spams daily before I went for this strategy). I never feel anymore the need to use SK or any CAPTCHA plugins. Before 1.5 I used AuthImage CAPTCHA plugin. Now that is not required. I have mentioned the links elsewhere in this forum or you can find it on my home page. let me know if it is useful to you.

  19. SK's new message (since v1.19) is far more user friendly:

It would appear that you are have been identified as a nasty comment spammer by Spam Karma and, as such, your comment has been deleted.
If you are only an innocent bystander in the War on Spam, please accept our apologies. The author of this blog will receive a digest containing your comment as well as the reasons why it was deleted. Try contacting him via email (there are many possible reasons: a very common one being the use of a proxy to access this blog).
Note: unless you know exactly why your comment has been deleted (contained a spam URL etc), do NOT try to repost your comment again. It would only result in your IP and website being banned permanently.
Check out: Spam Karma's Homepage for more information on this spam filter...

As for SpamKarma and false positives, please read: http://www.unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/false-positives/

Personally, I won't use SK again until v2 goes final. Bad Behavior is doing a wonderful job right now.

Well if you call this friendly :)

I admit it does explain some details.

But statements like this from a bot do make me feel insulted:

It would appear that you are have been identified as a nasty comment spammer by Spam Karma and, as such, your comment has been deleted.

    Wow! Judge, jury & executioner!

It also uses too tough means to deal with spamming like:

Note: unless you know exactly why your comment has been deleted (contained a spam URL etc), do NOT try to repost your comment again. It would only result in your IP and website being banned permanently.

Real spammers in my experience almost always uses compromised machines rendering IP banning meaningless.

BTW: If someone spams a SK enabled blog using Google proxy, will it then ban Google Web accelerator!
    I think it will :)

The problem is SK causes too much collateral damage IMHO.

Personally I think the all the spam deterrent measures used by SK needs to be clearly discussed and presented as options as also the messages presented to the end-user.

As it is, they appear unnecessarily harsh and degrading to the end-user.

It is full of boastful messages like how many spams it has eaten, do you want to be next etc. The fact is spammers don't read you blog before they start spamming you. It is their bots.
And bots don't care for idle boasts!
Normal users however may feel offended by such juvenile boasts.

  21. Yeah, I like Bad Behavior's message better. Ex: http://www.ioerror.us/software/bad-behavior/412-precondition-failed/

@macmanx Definitely they look much much better. I would have to try it out someday. Thanks for the link.

BTW: I have been successfully spam free using 1.5 with simple hashcash and referrer bouncer.

My approach to spam prevention is minimalist, do the absolute minimum that is necessary and without causing any discomfort for the end-user. The readers shouldn't even feel that it is working.

For example people go for pingback moderation. I am yet to see a spammer use that technique to spam. So I do not moderate it. I do not even auto-moderate trackback spam (which may change in future) because WP default capabilities can be used successfully to deter them.

When we take extra strong measures we go for larger collateral damage and false positives. I want to stay one step ahead of spammers and no more. Spam prevention is not a one off solution. It is dynamic. Strong measure taken now may become obsolete in few months time, why bother?

  23. I have been successfully spam free using 1.5 with simple hashcash and referrer bouncer.

Tom has been spam-free without the use for HashCash: http://www.tomrafteryit.net/comment-spam-plugins-no-longer-required/ ^_^

And, I just deal with WP's default tools and Bad Behavior: http://www.macmanx.com/wordpress/archives/2005/03/28/wordpress-anti-spam-solutions/

I wonder if the situation is till the same now :)
I too started without Hashcash, but after spam started getting in, I installed HashCash. I do not believe in too strong blacklist as words can be easily fudged. We all see that happening in emails.

He does use Referrer Karma plugin by Dr. Dave. He just doesn't classify it as a Spam Plugin, don't know why.

He uses .htaccess which is high maintenance AFAIK. Personally I am slightly afraid of it as I have seen how fast it can bring down your whole site, if you make even the slightest error :)

  25. He does use Referrer Karma plugin by Dr. Dave. He just doesn't classify it as a Spam Plugin, don't know why.

Well, technically, Referrer Karma is a PHP script. It's not a WordPress plugin.

He uses .htaccess which is high maintenance AFAIK. Personally I am slightly afraid of it as I have seen how fast it can bring down your whole site, if you make even the slightest error.

If you do have any problems with .htaccess, all you have to do is log in via FTP and delete it. Personally, I use .htaccess to blog referrer spam, and that does keep a large percentage of bad bots out. You'll do fine as long as you follow the guide: http://codex.wordpress.org/Combating_Comment_Spam/Denying_Access#Editing_.htaccess_To_Deny_Access_Referrer_Spammers

I prefer using .htaccess to block referrer spam because it's the most primitive "No" out there. If you match with any of my denied referrers, you get a simple 403 access denied error, no PHP processes, no MySQL queries, just a primitive "No". Of course, I also refresh my list of blocked referrers every week.

    > Well, technically, Referrer Karma is a PHP script. It's not a WordPress plugin.
Anyway same functionality with less packaging maybe.

I agree that you can delete .htaccess from ftp. I wouldn't even go that there are accounts without ftp access etc.
To me the key concern is to Keep It Simple. Using a simple one-click plugin looks better to me because I don't have to manually modify any file through ssh (or ftp download & upload) etc. I also don't have to watch out regularly whether my blog is broken because I, by mistake, broke some .htaccess rules. Again these are not impossible, just more time-consuming. I would rather delegate the job to someone else, a script or plugin. For experts in .htaccess I am sure it doesn't matter. Let's however look at the rest.

It's like whether you use ed or emacs :)
For windows people: edlin or ms Word or even notepad.

As for slight performance penalty, in php world, I am already sacrificing performance for convenience :)
If I want to extract best performance from a system, I would use Java.

As we say in Bengali, when I have my bed in the river, why should I care for dews?

    @angusman:
What I saw last night was 2 or 3 successive posts where you made sweeping statements about Spam Karma. You implied huge disatisfaction across the community, that it was bad code, that SK was just a "BAD THING".
    It isn't.

drDave has given a great deal of time to the development and support of SK and regardless of what your experience is, the fact is that there are very many satisfied users of his code. Anyone who has taken the time to go to his blog will see that he acknowledges some issues and says that these are fixed for the 1.5.1 release of WP.

I am neither defending drDave specifically or wanting to abuse my 'power'. drDave is not here to defend his code and I would expect that you would want the opportunity to defend your code should someone start having a pop at it. And as for what I wrote - for all I knew you were going to hunt out and comment on every post that mentioned SK so I wrote what I did.

There are a lot of plugins written for WP that crossover on function ("Recent Posts" is an example). Do I expect MtDewVirus, coffee2code and Matt to start dissing each other's code just so their method gets used instead ? No I certainly do not and I would hope that this forum does not descend to that level ("My toy is better that his toy"). We highlight choices to users, we advise if their circumstances warrant it and if appropriate, we mention our experiences. But we do not bad mouth the work of others.

Okay, well this is all well and good you guys. It's great to get a debate going about all of this. However this does not answer my question of how do I stop friends from being made into 'bad spammers'

Yes, I am using WP 1.2.1, and No, I cannot up grade to 1.5 at the moment because I have no idea how to work phpmyadmin, and can't for the life of me find any material to help me make it work (I can't even loggon).

Yes, I am using SK 1.20alpha, though it was very, very difficult to find because everything was pointing to SK2!! lol. Damn new buzzes (sarcastic).

Yes, I have tried resetting my blacklist, several times (if you've read this whole thread, you would see that this has been suggested before).

So I'm at a loose end. My hair is falling out. My pimples are coming up all over the place because of stress. Please, someone please throw me a bone here. What should I do?

PS, just so you know, I actually have really liked SK apart from my friends not being able to comment. It's easy to use, easy to install, and thank you DRD for creating this pluggin.
