 * Hi,
 * I have built a WP site for a client, and she keeps getting these spam-ish comments,
   although all comment functions are inactivated as far as I can see. What can
   be done about this?

 * Use the Akismet plugin

 * You may try [**anti-spam plugin**](http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/anti-spam/).
 * It blocks spam in comments without captcha.
 * It is very easy to use: just install and it works invisibly for admin (without
   moderation queues) and for users (without capcha).

 * The best one I’ve ever used (and continue to use) is Captcha.
 * Check it out in plugin repository:
 * [http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/captcha/](http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/captcha/),
   it’s simple, well coded, maintained and works.
 * I hope this helps,
    Paul
