Space above banner image dull and not sure what do to

I’m using theme Snow Summit. I imported my own banner image.

There is a blank space between the banner image and the date (top left).

I’m not sure what this space is for (widgets, etc?)… I would like to use it for ads, or perhaps a menu, or leave it blank but shrink the space. It’s so plain and kind of distracting to the eye.

Any thoughts how to get rid of it, or use it for these abovementioned purposes?
