• My site is three years old, and I’m no longer in contact with its developer. I’m not sure if he modified its source code, but I have some problems which are difficult to explain. I don’t get them on a test site I recently set up with most of the same settings and plugins. So, my questions are :

Do old source code modifications survive WordPress updates? (I’ve certainly updated WP several times since I lost contact with the developer.)

And if so, how can I discover if my source code has been modified?

I’m sorry for asking these beginner’s questions, but it’s important for me to have an answer. I’d appreciate all help!

    Thanks!

No. Any changes to core files are over-written when the site updates.

There’s various tools around that can check files for differences. Most will do this file-by-file, but that would be pretty tedious for all of the files in the WordPress system. There’s probably some that can do drectories or groups of files, so I’d look for something that can support that.

If the core code was modified, and you’ve updated, you won’t be able to see the changes any logner anyway as they’ll all be over-written with the new versions code, so trying to find where changes are would be pretty futile.
