Been beating my head on this one for some time, and no closer to fixing it.

I’m sort of self hosted, as my WordPress site is on my ISP, Ionos. They provide the WordPress install. That’s pretty much all I know about the nitty gritty of this actual installation.

I’ve been using the native WordPress Gallery do-hicky to insert groups of pictures. No add-in/plugins involved, so let’s not go there.

I am using Filebird, but that should have no relation to the issue.

My image files are suitably named to allow sorting, but WordPress doesn’t. Doing a drag and drop to create a Gallery from within the block editor presents the images in a pseudo random order.

I’ve been to this page regarding the topic:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_the_gallery_shortcode

But, yea verily it has no function. I’ve tried various formats of the option codes shown from within the code editor, but no soap.

I’m importing more than a handful of images, so hand sorting is NOT the solution, please don’t suggest it….

So, without an addin/plugin, how do I sort my images by filename in a gallery?

Once the Gallery Block is added, you can organize the photos this way: https://wordpress.org/support/article/gallery-block/#moving-images

Is that what you mean by “Doing a drag and drop to create a Gallery from within the block editor presents the images in a pseudo random order,” because if so that’s definitely not how it should work, so this may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Twenty-One theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

    Sorry, been out slaying dragons.

Ran the Health Check thingy. It complained about an old version of MySQL. Will ping 1and1 about that.

    Sorry for the vernacular.

To insert a Gallery from the Block Editor, I click on the block insertion do-hicky (plus sign) and then select Gallery. It then gives me the option of Upload or Select Images. Choosing Select Images, I choose media library. Then I have the option to pick images.

As I’ve got filebird installed, I can narrow the list down to a specific folder. I pick all of the items in the folder and choose “Create a New Gallery”. Then I get a box to “Edit my gallery”, which only allows for dragging and dropping in a different order or deleting files. Typically the images presented here are in a quasi-random order. Some by filename, but the lowest numbered filename never at the top. Typically some number of the first sequence of images are attached to the bottom of the group.

If the widget allowed for selecting more than one image to reposition, this would be fairly easy to fix, but alas only one at a time. The more images imported, the more of them at the bottom. The sorting process is made more difficult by the small thumbnails, and that they are all the same aspect ratio, whether the image is portrait or landscape.

The final action is “Insert Gallery”. No where am I given the option to sort the images.

I’m going to drag my feet on changing themes, as I’ve done that in the past and the results were, as they say, “sub-optimal”. The theme I’m using is not Block Editor friendly and I’ve managed to arm twist it into doing more or less what I want.

    My site is https://www.dubea.com BTW.

    thanks

Ok, so it sounds like you’re seeing FileBird’s gallery block.

To be clear, WordPress’s gallery block operates this way: https://wordpress.org/support/article/gallery-block/#moving-images

In this case, I recommend reporting the issue at https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/filebird/ so the plugin’s developers and support community can help you with this.

H’mmm. Never, ever would have thought that. I’ve got a shadow WordPress install (well, sort of) on a Raspberry pi that I play with and disabled the Filebird on that as a test.

And yea verily files came in sorted by filename as intended.

Thank you very much for the assistance. I’ll post a note in the Filebird support area.

    cheers

Well. It’s a bit of a jumble now. What worked on my shadow system does not work on my production system. Argh.

Moving forward, I’ll get 1and1 to update MySql and php as evidently they are obsolete. I will then find a theme that is actually supported, and then work from there.

    Appreciate your help.

This is beginning look like death from a thousand cuts. 1and1 cannot automatically upgrade my mysql from v5.5 to v5.7. Has to be done manually. ack.

Well, that’s first on the list as my shadow system has v5.7.

    Thanks again.

    Chris,

I now have the same problem. I am unable to sort downloaded image files using the standard processes I have used for 9+ years with great ease and trouble-free. Now I cannot move any image to re-order the files. I am using twenty-twelve which has been a good and reliable workhorse. I have over 2000 pages with image albums on most pages. I would be interested to know if your issues were resolved satisfactorily or are you still in limbo-land?
    Suggestions ??

@hhwykle What you’re describing is a known problem and will be fixed in WordPress 5.9.1: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/54902

    LOL.

    Not the problem I’m having.

When I import photos, they are imported in an odd order.

Typically inverted, but with some at the bottom end correctly sequenced, although occasionally they come in in the desired (sequential) order. Ghosts, demons, whatever seem to be impacting this situation.

I’ve asked for some sort of response regarding this in another plea for help.

    No response WHATSOVER….

I’m guessing the crack(ed) team either cannot or does not want to address the topic.

    H’mmm….

I’ll delete that thread, duplicates just muddy things up.

    Let’s go back to basics.

What version of WordPress, PHP, and MySQL are you currently running on the site with the problem?

I’m guessing the crack(ed) team either cannot or does not want to address the topic.

Please note that WordPress is offered for free, build and supported entirely by volunteers.

    (@chrisdubea)

    Well, that’s helpful….

    Latest version of everything.

    Stand by my comments.

Question sounds simple enough. Yet, I’ve been asking it for 5 months.

The existing online documentation with regard to the topic is eons old. Perhaps it should be deleted…..

All I want to do is import images in descending order. They are sequentially numbered which corresponds to the order they were created.

This was the situation 5 months ago, it continues to be the situation through the evolution of WP to the latest edition.

    Again, sounds simple enough.

    Latest version of everything.

That is highly unlikely, and if true, you’d be running a version of PHP that WordPress is not yet compatible with.

So again, back to the question.

What versions of WordPress, PHP, and MySQL are you currently running on the site with the problem?

If you don’t know, go to Tools > Site Health > Info in your site’s Dashboard.

The WordPress version is under the WordPress drop-down.

The PHP version is under the Server drop-down.

The MySQL version is under the Database drop-down.

    Thread Starter chrisdubea

    (@chrisdubea)

    Sure, I’ll play

I have no control over any of this BTW. It’s all provided by 1and1.

    Wordpress = Version 5.9
    PHP version – 7.4.25
    MySQL – Server version 5.7.33
    Client version mysqlnd 7.4.25

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

    Excellent, thank you.

To go full circle in the previous reply where you said you had the latest versions, the latest version of PHP is 8.1.2 https://www.php.net but WordPress still has a small handful of issues with that, so PHP 7.4.25 is excellent, though 7.4.27 will have the latest bug and security fixes for that branch.

That’s why knowing these things is important. 🙂

So, now that we have those established, back to the basic issue. You are unable to drag around the images in the desired order?

If this is in WordPress’s Gallery Block, that’s a known issue under WordPress 5.9 that will be fixed in 5.9.1: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/54902

I’m unsure why you would have had that issue in previous versions, but under 5.9 as it stands now, it will be fixed with the next release.

    Thread Starter chrisdubea

    (@chrisdubea)

The issue I have, and have been having, is when I create a gallery, the images come in a descending sequence order vice an ascending sequence.

When the images are imported from my local drive with the add new windows, they are shown in ascending order.

When the images are listed in the media page, the order can be changed from ascending to descending or vice versa.

When I create a gallery, the first image (lowest numbered) is shown first, with the remainder inverted. i.e. image001, image095, image094, etc, etc.

When a gallery is created, the images are inverted in the gallery creation display window, and the gallery is created in reverse order. image095, image094, image093, etc, etc, etc.

    To quote from above:

“All I want to do is import images in descending order. They are sequentially numbered which corresponds to the order they were created.”

Just this morning I had the pleasure of going into the code editor and manually renumbering some >100 photos that were sorted in an ascending order.

I’m currently using filebird, but this issue exists whether filebird is installed or not.

    Thank you
