We have added the new option to sort pictures. Please update Photo Gallery plugin and check it. You can find this option on the Images list. Please check the screenshot – http://prntscr.com/asjcig.

Great! Can the photos be displayed on the page by date and can the date be displayed in the caption or near the caption? Thanks!

If you sort images by date in the settings on Image list – gallery on frontend of the sire will display images in the same order.
As for date in caption – unfortunately now there is no such ability.
