Someone added Blu Host to my blogroll without me knowing anything about it

  • Hi,

I noticed that I had trouble logging onto my website this morning at astrocelebrities.com and then found after clearing my cache folder that someone had added ‘Web Hosting’ to my blogroll without me knowin anything about this. When I click on the page it comes up as Blu Host and some kind of forum page – and I can;t get rid of it – every time I try it seems to come back again.

How do I get rid of it? How do I prevent a repeat performance?

  • I don’t have any idea yet, but please first put an empty index.html into the http://astrocelebrities.com/wp-content/plugins/ folder, I can see all your plugins..

Do you have a backup which you can restore?

    Regards
    Stefan

    Hi Stefan,

Thanks for the reply – how can you see the plugins – sorry I am a beginner – they don’t come up when I look at the site.

I do have a backup – thankfully – but don’t know how to use it yet. I can access plugins folder but am not sure what you mean by empty index.html in there.

    Will go look anyway.

    Thanks – Helen

just open notepad and save a blank file as index.html and upload it to your plugins directory – this will stop folks like me from seeing your plugins

    do you have a link?
it looks like someone is hacking you – which is possible since you still run ver. 2.6

I’m relieved, an expert answered 🙂
I also think somebody hack you.
What kind of link do you mean?

    Anyway:

    Hi Helen,

When you type in your browser the address http://www.yoursite.com/wp-content/plugins/, you can see all your plugins. It’s not good, because a hacker can see it too and find a bug in one of these plugins which allow him to do bad things (like adding a link).

Please have a look at this page:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress

Additional I suggest you to use notepad to create a empty page called “index.html”. Then you just have to put this new file in the folder “plugins” in your “/wp-content/” folder. If you have done that you can check again the address above if you still can see the plugins (you should see instead a white page).

How have you made a backup? Export the datas or made a copy of the whole wordpress folder?

    Regards

    Stefan

    Hi Samboll & Pierig,

Thanks for your help. I’ll add the file right away – then get some help with restoring back up.

    :>) hardly!

    Hi,

I do have a link for the title ‘Web Hosting’ on blog roll. It is:

    http://www.openbluhost.com

Have contacted webmaster and asked him what is going on. So will wait and see if I get a reply.

Have added index.html to plugins folder too.

    Thanks again – Helen

I am having the same issue with the openbluhosting.com link showing up in my blogroll, but I am running WordPress 2.7, and as far as I can tell, my plugins folder is not visible.

Any other issues that might be causing this?
