Support » Plugin: Video Importer » SOLUTION for importing from modern YouTube CHANNELS.

  • This information is already in this forum, but not in a clearly understandable way. I highly recommend adding it to the FAQ.

In the thread “[resolved] Unable to import by channel name, a comment by Julisana (I hope I spelled that right) says to change the “UC” prefix to “UU” in the “playlist importer.”

In the thread “Video Importer Plugin not working” there is a comment by Emyr Thomas which is more clearly stated and makes it clear that, counterintuitively, you must change the Type (dropdown) to “Playlist” instead of “User” even though a Channel is simply a newer version of a User on YouTube. It will not work if you leave the Type at the default setting of “User” even after changing the prefix!

Unfortunately, that thread has a title that people looking for solutions for this particular issue may not think to check, and also it’s not marked as “[resolved].” So, I started this one solely to make the existing information more easily accessible and understandable.

To Set Up a New YouTube Source for a New-Style YouTube Channel (as opposed to old-style deprecated YouTube User):

    • “Add New Source” as usual. Select the “YouTube” Source tab instead of “Vimeo.”
    • Important! Set the Type to “Playlist.” Yes, I know, you’re wanting to import a Channel and not a Playlist, but trust me (and Eyr and Julisana) on this one: you have to set it to “Playlist” or it will not work! You won’t get any error messages or log entries either to help you figure out why it doesn’t work, either.
    • In another browser tab, go to the desired YouTube Channel and drag-select the portion of the URL after “/channel/” and before any following slash. It will begin with “UC” and be followed by a bunch of seemingly random letters and numbers. Do not include any slashes! [Ctrl]+[C]opy that into your Clipboard.
    • Switch back to the WordPress site tab with the “Add New Source” page. [Ctrl]+[V] Paste the clipboard contents into the “Name/ID” text box (which is way too short to display the whole thing — this needs to be fixed). Do not Save the Source yet! There’s one more thing you need to do:
    • As stated above, the first two characters of the ID in the YouTube URL that you copied begin with “UC” (for “User Channel”). You must change the second character from “C” to “U”! That makes the two-letter prefix into “UU” for “User Uploads.” Again: if you neglect to do this, it will not work and you won’t get any indication as to what went wrong!
    • Set any other options as desired, such as post categorization and tagging. Note that auto-importing Tags from YouTube doesn’t work anymore apparently because YouTube no longer includes those in the API feed data.
    • Now Save it. It’ll take you to “All Sources” and you should now see it working with up to 50 recent videos imported!

To Fix an Existing YouTube Source for a New-Style YouTube Channel (as opposed to old-style deprecated YouTube User):

    • Go to the “All Sources” admin page.
    • “Edit” the desired YouTube Source.
    • Important! Change the Type to “Playlist.” Yes, I know, you’re wanting to import a Channel and not a Playlist, but trust me (and Emyr and Julisana) on this one: you have to set it to “Playlist” or it will not work! You won’t get any error messages or log entries either to help you figure out why it doesn’t work, either.
    • Also important! Look at the contents of the “Name/ID” field:
      • If it begins with “UC” (for User Channel) then simply change it to “UU” (for User Uploads) as noted above.
      • If it seems to be a random string of letters and digits but does not begin with “UC” nor “UU”, then try inserting “UU” in front of it. This most likely means that someone, trying to get it to work, had used the naked Channel ID without the prefix.
      • If it looks like a humanly readable name, then simply cancel out of the Edit, as this would be an old-style YouTube User. That should work, but if it doesn’t, something else is wrong beyond the scope of this post.
    • Save the changes. It’ll take you back to “All Sources” and you should now see it working with up to 50 videos imported!
