Support » Plugin: iThemes Security (formerly Better WP Security) » So far, I'm VERY happy.

  • I had a bunch of my sites hacked recently and have been scrambling to find something that will help prevent this kind of thing in the future. The details outlined in the details for this plugin closely match many of the security steps suggested in this article. Which made me excited. I’d rather have a plugin automate it than monkey with PHP and other things.

The author is careful to warn to use this only on the latest version of WordPress and also warns that it is best installed on new sites as existing sites could break. BUT, don’t let that scare you away.

I tested it first on a test installation of WordPress I use to test plugins and such. There wasn’t much content there and being a test site, I didn’t care if it broke. So I installed it, and set all the most critical security settings as recommended by the plugin. Not a single problem! Awesome.

So, for a new/infant installation of WP, I recommend it emphatically. But, that’s not all. I recently transitioned a client’s site from my development environment to their live hosting account. So, I had a full site to test it on. The site has custom post types, custom templates and 19 plugins. Again, installed Better WP Security and set all the critical risks. Nothing broke.

There was only one problem I ran into this time when I changed the wp-content folder name using the plugin. Many of my images disappeared. But, I was fortunate to have installed a plugin called Search and Replace that allows you to replace certain strings in the database. That did the trick.

So, while my experience may not be typical, I was able to install this on a live site and have it up in running with minor tweaks. I’ll monitor how well it protects me and update my review. For now, I am VERY happy.
