WordPress is supposed to have a famous 5 minute install, but I’ve been trying to do all of this for hours.

I’m trying to host through DreamHost. I downloaded WordPress and edited the config file. I have downloaded and installed FileZilla. I downloaded and installed MySQL Server. I downloaded Apache but no idea how to install that, I’ve been looking all over everywhere to try and figure it out. I downloaded PHP and I -think- its installed correctly, but I think its maybe not done correctly because I think thats where most of my problem is.

I did all of this under the impression that I was doing things right, but three hours later I am more confused than I have ever been in my life.

I sound like a complete and total newb, but I honestly have tried everything I can think of and I don’t have any techie friends.

  • Dreamhost provide a one-click installer for a number of applications, including WordPress.

I’m with another host so I can’t give you the specific steps for Dreamhost, but they should be similar. Basically you just login to your hosting account and find the one-click installer.

Once you have accessed the installer, you select WordPress.
You will then be asked to choose a username and password.

You will also be asked to choose the name of the folder where WordPress will be installed (the installer creates this folder for you)

Finally, you are asked for an admin name and an e-mail address.

    Hope this helps

Where are you installing these things? On the server?! or on your computer?

You should use WordPress installation tools offered by DreamHost. But if you setup WordPress manually, please make sure you set MySQL connection string correctly.

Mark- Thanks. I got all that figured out, actually.

Shirazdrum- I had a friend tell me I’d need all those things but once we sat down and chatted, I realized my mistakes.

    Dave- Thanks.

I got some tech support help last night and got it all figured out. Thanks for your help!
