Support » Plugin: WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway » Snuck in “Link pay faster” as enabled and caused serious issues

  • We’ve been moving folks away from this plugin for a wile as it was just so error prone a few years back. For those that stuck it out, if they had ApplePay enabled, it seems, they snuck in a Stripe “Link Pay Faster” button without asking and that has caused a myriad of issues:

    – If the client had two different Stripe implementations say Woo and Give, the button was added to other implementation, Give, and those donations just stopped (broke that implementation without any error).

    – If shipping was typically handled at “checkout”, and Link was magically preconfigured in the “cart” or “product page” (possibly from prior ApplePay settings? who knows!) then customers got shipping options they didn’t want or no shipping was charged. This was especially an issue when a much earlier implementation of ApplePay gave no such option. Clients had used css to hide the not wanted ApplePay buttons. Later, when the confog option was added, it wasn’t noticed for them and Link seemed to rely on this.

    – The Button placement was hash coloring and placed way above the standard buttons so folks stopped using those and orders just never happened.

    – The Link Pak Faster setting are HIDDEN! You have to click a great deal to find it. Settings & the fact that it even existed was so buried that it would not likely be noticed. Even if you were looking for it, it was hard to find (hidden!)

These things should never “magically appear”. Folks need to be asked to enable such potentially fraught changes. This plugin is complete garbage! Use the other one!

    Hi there,

Sorry to hear that the “Stripe Link” express checkout option caused issues on your site.

As of 10th November 2022, Stripe rolled out a change in their system that enables “Stripe Link” in their Payment Request Button implementation by default on all sites using Stripe gateway.

This change was enabled by default from Stripe’s end and not WooCommerce.

To turn this off, Stripe provided only one option, which is by disabling the Enable Link in the Payment Request Button option on your Stripe account.

    1. Go to https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/link
    2. Disable the “Link in the Payment Request Button” option

Since this setting was enabled by default from Stripe’s end and not WooCommerce. Can you please consider updating the review?

Please do let me know if you have any further questions!

There was no need to allow the default implementation, as you say, to break the checkout experience plummeting income. There are a myriad of ways that you could have dealt with this better, programmatically. There could have been a critical notice upon upgrade with the configuration option (you already have but that is buried) pointing out the serious change and the immediate need to review the implementation which, as I already stated, failed to work well. Do you realize that some, individual plugin users lost tens of thousands of dollars because the implementation doesn’t work, and was not well disclosed in the UI or the change log? Is it Strip’s fault that it was implemented in such ways that it decreased sales by 90% and completely eliminated donation via third-party plugins like Give from workig at all because you programatically injected your Woo intended code onto their checkout forms?

    Hi @sandyme,

Thank you for the feedback on your outcome.

However, disabling the Enable Link in the Payment Request Button option is meant to remove the green LINK button. If you are looking to add other payment methods in its place you can manage the different payment methods here: https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/payment_methods.

Please let me know if this helps.

Thank you for your response. I have a support ticket open.
