Support » Plugin: SnapID Two-Factor Authentication » SnapID code doesn’t show up

  • I just installed SnapID and was impressed by its simplicity of setup and operation. However, when I try to log in with the 2-factor authentication option enabled I often get only a line of stars showing up in the popup window where there should be a number to dial and a code to enter. At the top of the box it says “Cheatin’ Huh?”. What does that mean?? This can go on for 4 or 5 attempts to login until the stars finally disappear and are replaced by the needed numbers to call in. Is there a simple fix for this problem?
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hello @thewatcher2,

The code you are seeing “Cheatin’ Huh?” is not TextPower’s. We have never had nor seen that code in the SnapID plugin. We can only assume that your site has been compromised.

Please deactivate and then delete the SnapID plugin. Then download it directly from the WordPress plugin library and install it.

At the same time we will investigate whether the actual plugin code has been somehow compromised.

Thank you for letting us know.

    Hello Again,

After consulting with our tech team they state the following:

The “Cheatin’ Huh?” is a popular phrase to use in WordPress world when the handshake between the frontend code and backend code do not match; this is a security measure not a compromised site.

It could possibly be a conflict with another plugin. In these situations it is recommended to disable all plugins (except SnapID) and test if you still get the message. If you do not get the message and the plugin works as it should, then the issue is with another plugin. At that point, enable your other plugins one by one testing each time. Once you get the error message again, you know which plugin is causing the issue.

Please test this and let us know the result.

    Thank you.

Thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately, the plugin started to completely lock me out of my site with the same “Cheatin’ Huh?” message. After deleting the plugin, the login with my user name and password worked fine. I next did a Wordfence Security scan for malicious code, and it found nothing unusual. I also took a quick look at the files on my server and found nothing out of the ordinary. The error log also didn’t flag any suspicious activity. I can be sure my site isn’t infected, because Google typically finds this quickly with their crawlers and would send me an immediate message indicating a compromised site and shut down my Adwords campaign until it was fixed. It appears that the problem is originating with the SnapID plugin. I downloaded it directly from WordPress.org. Hope you can get this figured out.
    Thanks,
    Greg

When I get a chance, I’ll also try disabling all my plugins on my test site and then installing SnapID. Then I’ll re-enable each plugin and check the results. I’ll get back to you if I can identify the culprit.
    Thanks,
    Greg

I have determined that SnapID is incompatible with the plugin Wordfence Security. Wordfence has a number of login security options to prevent hacking attacks. After disabling Wordfence on my test site, SnapID worked fine with 2-factor authentication enabled. It did not bring up the “Cheatin Huh?” message either, but worked perfectly. Note that a previous 2-factor authentication plugin I used (Clef, which is no longer available) worked well with Wordfence enabled. SnapID must use a protocol that conflicts with the Wordfence Security login options. I hope you can overcome these conflicts, because I believe SnapID could be one of the best authentication options available for WordPress sites.
    Thanks!
    Greg
