 * All:
 * New here and trying to take in a lot.
 * I have managed to get the software installed and the network option to appear
   and the super admin tab to show up.
 * However, I have gone out to test as an end user and two things don’t happen.
 * 1) I never get an e-mail with a password. Funny thing about that is that I don’t
   get one from the wordpress.org website either and had to create a new account
   and get the administration involved…that aside. Where do we set SMTP stuff as
   I use authentication for relaying e-mail from my mail server.
 * 2) After registering I logged in as the admin and there is no user account or
   site set up for the user that I just registered. The same one that I don’t have
   an e-mail for.
 * I have tested using my yahoo account also and never receive anything so I don’t
   suspect it is on the receiving end of my mail either.
 * This is REALLY holding up my ability to progress…the ‘5 minute’ install has run
   into a ‘5 day’ install.
 * Thanks in advance.
    Chris

 * There’s soem SMTP plugins out there in the repo for single WP that do indeed
   help with this when you’re running a network.
 * From all my work with setting up wpmu sites though, 9/10 times it’s the box not
   sending mail properly, or the email is blocked on the receiving end. reverse
   dns records can help too.

 * crickets?
 * Can someone at least shed some light on WHERE the SMTP controls are housed within
   the software so I can look at it?

 * Sorry…I must not have reloaded the page and missed your post.
 * I can assure you that my server is set up properly..
 * The situation that I know is probably causing this is that my server REQUIRES
   authentication…
 * if I don’t set a user/pass then the software will NOT be able to relay an e-mail
   out.
 * phpBB has an option within the admin panel that allows me to select authentication
   and enter a user/pass. Since WP doesn’t have that option I am assuming it is
   in a config file somewhere and I need to code it in there.
 * Since my WP install is on one server and the mail server is elsewhere I am curious
   if it trying to use a ‘localhost’ to send out the e-mail. Since this server doesn’t
   handle e-mail that will obviously fail.
 * My reverse DNS is set up correctly also.
 * Thanks,
    Chris

 * I should add that it fails when testing to a yahoo account also. I think they
   might have their e-mail set up correctly for receiving..;)

 * I humbly accept being WRONG…!
 * Ok…here is what I found and I hope this might even help someone else in the future.
 * My setup is 4 servers in total in my house.
 * DNS, Mail, Web, DB.
 * This install was on the web server.
 * I was thinking that the WP install was using the supplied admin e-mail to attempt
   to connect over to my mail server and send out…however, it is just using the
   local box (which does have mail installed, just not used).
 * My mail server (postfix) did not allow a relay from the web box internally (as
   it never handles mail anyway).
 * So where I was thinking it was using the domain name to find my mail server and
   relay from it…it was actually doing everything internal.
 * So adding the IP address within Postfix to allow a relay from the web servers
   IP address fixed the replay issue and the 3rd test went out perfectly.
 * I will investigate any security issues or more refined relay allow-ability as
   I don’t want to just open the flood gates on this web box to be able to relay
   off my mail server for obvious reasons.
 * There might be a few other minor issues like reply back, but since that is handled
   by the mx record as long as the reply e-mail is set correctly (which I have verified)
   then they should find their destination perfectly fine.
 * I think I covered everything here and so far it appears to be working nicely
   on the latest test account.
 * Never give up…;) and of course my favorite personal quote ‘stupid computers’.
 * Thanks!!

 * Yeah, that’s the term I was trying to think of. 😀 As to the software just using
   the internal mail.
