SMTP doesn't work (5 posts)

I would like to send mails via smtp. I also tried some wp plugins to configure smtp but at least smtp could not connect to host.
I would like to send the mails via a remote service like gmail but couldn't figure out how to get things running. I have access to the console as root and the question is what I have to configure on linux level. In yast I configured the mail to send mails to the provider but I don't know how to check the different levels (linux, apache, php, wp) if they are configured correct or not.

Does someone knows a fool proof tutorial on how to get stmp started with linux and wp?

    Thanks a lot,

    Hello keesiemijer,

thanks for your answer. I already tried the plugin and it says that it cannot connect to host. Therefore I am searching for a possibility to take a look where in the mail-chain the problem occurs. Is it my linux-system, the provider ....

    Thanks, Vanessa

Ask your server administrator what SMTP settings you should use to send email

VanessaMartinezX, you probably need to check your PHP settings, particularly around fopen() permissions, and check to see if you have ssl support enabled in PHP. I'm not sure what the specific settings you need are to be honest, I've never had to look into it, it's always "just worked" on my servers. I'd be happy to spend some time figuring it out with you if you like, I'm keen to get a definitive list of what settings are required to make it work.

Are there any firewall issues from your host on port 25 by any chance?

    [Disclosure, I'm the plugin author.]
