Smilies showing up as blank (6 posts)

I know the smilies issue has been addressed but I don't see any fixes for the nighly version I upgraded to on the weekend. I'm hoping that someone will answer me since I've posted about 3 different things lately and nobody's said a word.
With the new build 1.2 none of my smilies are showing up... just a blank and shows the code, e.g. :)
I have the smilies in the proper subdirectory. Is there a code somewhere that I can change so they'll show? Or should I move them to another directory for them to show? They are currently in wp-images/smilies and I've chmod to 666 on each one.
    Can you help?

If you look at http://www.jackiefg.com/wp/index.php?p=44 there's a post with a smilie in it. You see the X for the image and the :) beside it.
Is there some place I should change the code?

When I try to bring up the smilie from the code inserted into the page
    http://www.jackiefg.com/wp/wp-images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
I get "You don't have permission to access /wp/wp-images/smilies/icon_smile.gif on this server."

Yes, I got that too - should I reset my directory (or smilies themselves) to a certain permission level? I've just played with it and seen no change, it still doesn't access it.

Now I tried resetting all smilies to 777 and it didn't change anything - still could not access them.
